Jennifer Coffman, Ph.D.
Jennifer Coffman is a Research Associate
in the Psychology Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill and the Assistant Director for Training and Research at the Center
for Developmental Science. She received her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology
in 2005, under the mentorship of Peter Ornstein. Her dissertation, A
Longitudinal
Examination of the Development of Children’s Memory Strategies in
the Context of the First-grade Classroom, was embedded within an ongoing
NSF-Funded longitudinal study examining elementary school classrooms and
children’s memory development. Jennifer’s program of research is directed toward understanding
mechanisms of change in cognitive development and is directly influenced
by her experiences as an elementary school teacher. She is interested
in factors in school and other environments that may contribute to children's
acquisition of effective memory strategies, academic achievement, and
metacognitive knowledge. Additionally, she is interested in more general
questions regarding the processes at work and the contexts in which learning
and memory development are supported.
In addition, Jennifer serves as the Assistant Director for Training
and Research at the CDS. In this role, she is responsible for organizing
the Carolina Consortium on Human Development (CCHD) Proseminar Series,
facilitating the IRB process for research projects administered through
the CDS, assisting with administrative reporting functions, and coordinating
the CCHD training program.
